Diagram 2 illustrates the right hemisphere — not typically dominant for language, but playing an indispensable supporting role. It handles emotional tone, prosody (the melody of speech), and nuances of communication: the implied meaning behind a sarcastic remark, the leap required to understand a metaphor, and the timing that makes a joke land. It also does something more specific and underappreciated: tracking who is talking — their particular pitch range, rhythm, and set of acoustic quirks that make each voice a kind of fingerprint.

Diagram 3 takes you beneath the surface — the structures that support language from the inside: initiating speech, monitoring for errors, connecting language to memory, and relaying sound on its way up to the language engine room.
